<trans-abstract xml:lang="en"><p>This analytical review consists of two interconnected parts devoted to human herpesvirus type 4, or Epstein–Barr virus (HHV-4, EBV). The first part examines the characteristics of the epidemic process and spread of EBV infection, the cytomorphological characteristics of the viral particle, and aspects of the etiopathogenesis of EBV-associated diseases in humans. Particular attention is paid to the unique molecular genetic stages and forms of EBV, risk factors that increase susceptibility to the pathogen, and conditions that promote viral reactivation. The presented data demonstrate a complex interaction between the pathogen and the human immune system, including mechanisms that facilitate lifelong persistence of the virus in the body.</p></trans-abstract><kwd-group xml:lang="ru"><kwd>вирус Эпштейна–Барр</kwd><kwd>вирус герпеса человека 4 типа (ВГЧ-4)</kwd><kwd>эпидемический процесс</kwd><kwd>факторы риска</kwd><kwd>инфекционный мононуклеоз</kwd><kwd>строение вируса</kwd><kwd>патогенез</kwd><kwd>иммунная система</kwd></kwd-group><kwd-group xml:lang="en"><kwd>Epstein–Barr virus</kwd><kwd>human herpesvirus type 4 (HHV-4)</kwd><kwd>epidemic process</kwd><kwd>risk factors</kwd><kwd>infectious mononucleosis</kwd><kwd>viral structure</kwd><kwd>pathogenesis</kwd><kwd>immune system</kwd></kwd-group></article-meta></front><back><ref-list><title>References</title><ref id="cit1"><label>1</label><citation-alternatives><mixed-citation xml:lang="ru">De Martel C., Ferlay J., Franceschi S. et al.
